Digital image receptors (DR IRs) have a self scanning readout mechanism, which is mounted on an array of an X-ray detector. It receives the exit radiation from the patient and converts the varying intensity (variable intensity) of the X-ray into an electronic signal for digitization in the same proportion.

DR system

There is a two step image acquisition process in the CR system due to which there is a huge time lag in image capture and image readout. In DR imaging system these two processes are combined together. As a result, DR image is obtained immediately after exposure. The DR image receptor is more fragile and more expensive than the CR image receptor. Several types of IRs are used for direct radiography. Which is as follows -
