position of patient and cassette
Patient के shoulder को cassette सामने रखते हुए patient को खड़ा किया जाता हैं। patient के median sagittal plane को cassette के समांतर रखते है। patient के head को flexed या extended इस प्रकार रखते है जिससे कि angle of mandible cervical vertebrae के upper anterior भाग पर superimposed न हो जाए या occipital bone Atlas के posterior arch को ढक न ले । इस position को बनाए रखने या patient को हिलने डुलने से रोकने के लिए patient के पैरों को अलग रखते हैं तथा patient के shoulder को cassette stand के सामने आराम से रख देते हैं।
अगर lower cervical vertebrae को देखना हो तो shoulder depressed होना चाहिए जैसा की चित्र में दिखाई दे रहा है। patient को shoulder आराम से नीचे करने का कहकर lower cervical vertebrae को देखा जा सकता है । यदि patient सक्षम हो तो patient को पूछकर हाथों में वजन रखकर arrested expiration में exposure दिया जाता हैं।

Horizontal central ray को mostoid process के नीचे तथा thyroid cartilage के level पर लम्बवत बिंदु पर देते है।
Essential image characteristics
Atlanto-occipital से लेकर ऊपर की पहली thoracic vertebrae तक पूरी cervical spine image में शामिल होनी चाहिए। mandible या occipital bone upper vertebrae के किसी भी भाग को obscure नही करना चाहिए। neck के soft tissues भी शामिल होने चाहिए। soft tissue और bony detail के लिए contrast को इस प्रकार रखते जिससे पर्याप्त densities प्राप्त हो ।
